Weglot review: what we found in testing

Author: nopetnoget editors ·

Summary

For freelancers and in general for owners of informational or brand websites who want to adapt their resources to different language groups quickly.

Verdict: 5/10. Failed to obtain a translation, difficult to verify and make a decision regarding integration with the service. Administrator assistance is needed. First thing to do: Simplify domain verification or provide an opportunity to test translation quality without connecting the domain.

Test scenario

Step 1

Is it clear in 10 seconds what the product does and who it’s for?

Users should not encounter problems on the first screen, the headline is immediately readable – AI translation and quality. The key message of the project team is that the service performs automatic translation of pages using AI, taking into account the context of the website, brand and company. It should be noted separately that the CTA button has a clear message – 14 days free, everything else will be paid. The button link leads to the registration page https://dashboard.weglot.com/register The main menu navigation is very logical and at first glance does not cause any problems. In general, the entire layout of the first screen is set up for quality communication with a new visitor. Perhaps it lacked specific case links to partners or examples of how it works. But there are no problems – the first link in the menu takes you to a page where it explains in more detail how the service works.

Step 2

How many sign-up steps are there, and is a card required immediately?

A classic registration page for corporate SaaS – a promo block and a form block. Registration is available via Google Auth. The registration flow itself is a quiz survey that gradually fills out your profile and seamlessly transitions you to the mode of creating your first translation project where you fill in information about your website and choose the languages for which you want to get automated translation. As you gradually move through the registration form, you get the impression that it will take a long time, there is a desire to complete this process as quickly as possible. But to get "first value" you still need to go through this path.

Step 3

Are newcomers guided, or dropped into an empty interface?

Failure! When trying to add the website https://nopetnoget.com/ for translation, the system threw an error and provided an information guide with a large amount of information that disappears very quickly. The reason is actually painfully banal: "It looks like your website uses a Cloudflare proxy server". To test the capabilities of the service, we decided not to do this because it raises a question about future consequences and certain risks of such actions. Plus, if you are not an administrator, it will be very difficult to do. We tried to continue the test and selected another donor site on popular Wordpress without integration with Cloudflare. But to continue, you still have to change DNS records for the domain(!). Another time we found ourselves facing a choice: continue or "bother with it". Step failed: The need to involve an administrator in the process who can/is willing to change/add DNS records to confirm the domain.

Step 4

How long from “Get started” to the first useful result?

We were unable to get the first value on the first try, for DNS record settings – we contacted the domain administrator. Despite the failure in testing, we can note that the project team declares the preservation of SEO optimization of the website. But testing this also failed. Upd: Even changing the domain settings on Cloudflare did not allow us to complete the process of obtaining "first value". The service began hysterically throwing errors that prevent you from doing anything and moving forward in the flow. Step failed: Failed to verify the domain, changing the Cloudflare settings according to the instructions did not give the desired result.

Step 5

Does the product work on a different task beyond the demo case?

Not tested on the first try. Step failed: The "first value" scenario was not completed.

Step 6

Where does the free plan end, and what breaks on unusual input?

Could not evaluate, there was a problem with domain verification. Step failed: The "first value" scenario was not completed.

Step 7

On the payment screen, is it clear what you are paying for?

Fairly transparent pricing, which is limited by the user's ability based on the number of words. The €15/month plan gives you 10,000 words (€0.0015 per word) for translation, and the €699 plan – 5M (€0.0001398). If your page has an average of 3000-4000 characters, which equals 450–650 words, then on the maximum plan you will get the opportunity to translate ~8000 pages. Could not evaluate the quality of translation and compare it with the cost.

Step 8

How do you unsubscribe, delete the account, and export your data?

You can delete your account from the profile page, but before that you need to delete all your projects. The deletion process is linear without complex or retentive flows. After deletion, you are not redirected to the homepage, you have to do it yourself. Re-registration is possible.

How do you unsubscribe, delete the account, and export your data?

Three focus questions

Focus 1

How clear is the product onboarding?

During the first visit to the website and registration / onboarding, there were no problems. Problems arose during domain verification and confirming ownership by adding DNS records.

Focus 2

Is the pricing logical?

Prices limit the number of words available for translation, the cost per word decreases proportionally with an increase in monthly payment. There is logic in this.

Focus 3

Does the product fit the stated audience?

Failed to verify. There remains a feeling that the project would be suitable for owners of small brand corporate websites and blogs. However, there are risks for corporate websites, the responsibility for translation quality is completely transferred to artificial intelligence, reputational risks remain with the business owner or business process.

Takeaways

01 What worked Simple navigation, friendly design of the homepage and easy-to-understand pricing.
02 What annoyed To test it, you'll have to "slay the dragon" with DNS record confirmation for the domain.
03 Who it’s not for This question is difficult to answer, flexible plans allow you to translate both a simple single-page website and a huge information portal. Also, the project team reserves the right to individual arrangements with the client on the Enterprise plan.
04 Fix first Simplify domain verification or provide an opportunity to test translation quality without connecting the domain.
