Summary

For people who need to translate PDF documents into another language in large volumes, from 100 or more pages per month. The project has certain translation quality issues, so before using it you need to test how it works with your specific subject matter and your files. Clearly the project will not be suitable for some language pairs.

Verdict: 6/10. The project works, but requires significant improvements, especially in the interface and usability, as well as in handling certain language pairs, for example: Ukrainian-English. First thing to do: Translation quality and the structure of the resulting file.

Test scenario

Step 1

Is it clear in 10 seconds what the product does and who it’s for?

Everything reads well on the first screen, Free AI document translator, High-quality document translation in one click. It is also noted that the service is completely free and there are no limits on the number of translated documents. A document upload form is immediately available. You also have immediate access to additional translation settings, namely AI model selection and more. The presence of small elements near the form on the first screen and its layout requires additional UX/UI designer research. Sometimes questions arise about why and what this will give me, what will this option do for me. There is also proactive registration via native browser Google Auth message.

Step 2

How many sign-up steps are there, and is a card required immediately?

The registration window is available by clicking from the main menu and has two options: registration via Google Auth provider and standard email/password form. We consider the attempt to draw attention to Google Auth registration unsuccessful; the button at the bottom of the form is read first, the Google button blends with the window background. Authorization via Google works standard and there are no questions. To log in via the form after Google Auth registration by provider you will need to use the password recovery option. Everything works quickly and correctly, you are provided with a verification code for your email, the code arrives quickly and doesn't go to spam, after confirmation you are given the opportunity to set your new password. After that you can also log in to your personal account using your login (email) and password. Everything works correctly.

Step 3

Are newcomers guided, or dropped into an empty interface?

There is no real onboarding; after registration there is also no personalization or transfer to your account, you remain on the home page where the hero block with a heading and translation form are still available to you. We consider this solution not entirely effective and one that could reduce conversion to "first action". Also, before using the service, we recommend carefully reading the file requirements for translation as well as the service usage requirements, because sometimes abbreviations raise many questions; clearly the team is aware of this, which is why they added hints to each of the key requirements.

Step 4

How long from “Get started” to the first useful result?

We actually received first value quickly, but the quality of this translation is not at all what could be better, it simply doesn't work. We translated API documentation, it is indeed a complex document, but the translation was from Ukrainian to English, and as a result we got just a set of letters very similar to the Turkic language group. In fact, the service did not translate the document. We did not get the desired result. So you have the ability to download a file to your device; on a free account this will be 5 files without watermark, and then a project watermark will be applied to the file. After rechecking, we noticed that when forming "first value" we set the Ukrainian→Mongolian pair; in this case, the service gave an approximate English version of the file, its visual structure was broken, there are typography issues. We set the same task to Claude AI and asked it to give us a PDF file of the translation, which the model handled much better by anticipating that it was not necessary to translate literal values of API commands; it left them in Cyrillic. Moreover, to set the task it was enough to write a simple prompt "translate to English the first page and make it a PDF file" whereas in the service there is a need to configure the work and language pairs for translation using the interface. In any case, you will get a result (which is good), but it may not satisfy you! Time: 6:33

Step 5

Does the product work on a different task beyond the demo case?

For the second scenario, we chose an invoice in Spanish and requested translation into Ukrainian. As a result, we got a more or less readable version, but the layout of the PDF file itself raises certain concerns; in the form that this system gives you the file, you will not be able to use it as a valid document. The service tried to preserve the invoice structure, but the text goes beyond the boundaries and overlaps. Also, if you look at the translation itself, some places were translated incorrectly in terms of content and form; the service did not handle technical terminology. We also tried translating a simple JPG, a screenshot of an English-language website into Ukrainian; the result was also not very high quality either in terms of vocabulary or in terms of the layout of the output document. Claude AI performed this attempt at a substantially higher level. Time: 5:25

Step 6

Where does the free plan end, and what breaks on unusual input?

After registration you are provided with 500 credits for generation; for three attempts to generate PDF files of 10 pages and a 1-page PDF file we spent only 25 tokens. But you have a limit on the number of files you can download for free to your device; this is only 5 documents. To understand whether the belindoc translation service will suit you, we think these are completely sufficient limits! That you are on a free plan, the service will gently remind you with an information block message that slightly blends with the background, but by clicking on it you will be able to view additional information about the paid services of the service. Personally, we think such a solution is very non-intrusive and may lead to a decrease in user conversion to paid services of the service.

Step 7

On the payment screen, is it clear what you are paying for?

For active users, the service offers a subscription model that provides for monthly payment according to one of two plans of your choice. Pro and Max for $19 and $59 respectively. The key difference is the number of pages you can translate; either 5000 or 10000. In addition, on the maximum plan you have additional premium credits, but we did not understand why. The maximum plan also gives you the ability to perform 20 simultaneous translations, which is more than twice that on the basic plan. Overall there is pricing logic; to figure out what works best for you, you need to spend some time, in our case about 15 minutes. You also have the opportunity to commit to annual terms and save about 64% per year according to the project team's claims, but this is somewhat not consistent with reality; for a simple plan with monthly payment you will spend $228 per year, but with an annual commitment $190. Actual savings are around 17%. Why the team emphasizes that the cost of a regular plan per year is $530, we did not understand. Time: 15:00

Step 8

How do you unsubscribe, delete the account, and export your data?

You do not have the ability to delete your account. Only through a direct request to support at support@belindoc.com.

How do you unsubscribe, delete the account, and export your data?

Three focus questions

Focus 1

How clear is the product onboarding?

There is no onboarding, you will have to test or get used to using the service through trial and error. There are a number of small form elements, additional information in small font and not very convenient hints. To the founder: You need to simplify the path for a new user to "first value" and isolate the user's workspace from commercial information on the first screen.

Focus 2

Is the pricing logical?

There is logic in pricing, it is not entirely clear what premium credits/tokens provide and why exactly 64% savings on annual commitments is mentioned. The cost should be compared with the cost of paid subscriptions of popular AI models. To the founder: Simplify the description of information and the logic of comparing subscription plans, figure out the actual savings on annual commits. This causes some dissonance and gives the feeling that someone is being deceived.

Focus 3

Does the product fit the stated audience?

We have no understanding of who exactly would benefit from this service; if we follow the team's logic, the project would suit those who need to translate PDF files or images into another language in large volumes: engineering documentation, comics or professional articles. In our case, we received a translated document of not very high quality. To the founder: Clearly indicate who would benefit most from the service and improve translation quality specifically for these audience segments. For example for engineers or API developers.

Takeaways

01 What worked The ability to familiarize yourself with how the service works on the free plan.
02 What annoyed Translation quality and lack of a client workspace. Interface overload.
03 Who it’s not for For those who have high requirements for the structure and formatting of final files. Translation into Ukrainian or from Ukrainian may also become a problem for the service in terms of quality.
04 Fix first Translation quality and the structure of the resulting file.

What the grades mean

A+
A product you can recommend without caveats: the path works end to end and first value arrives fast.
A
A strong product. Small rough edges remain, but they do not break the experience.
A-
A solid product you can actually use. The issues are local, not structural.
B
It works, but with noticeable friction. The value is there, yet the path to it is long or confusing.
C
A mixed result: there is a seed of value, but important parts of the flow break or stall.
D
A weak state. In its current form the product is hard to recommend.
